I think this is my fourth or fifth time playing clarinet.
first bit is me walking to my bass and setting up the mic and everything. I sorely need a new mic stand, this one is falling to bits.

"Eastern" sounding melodic material (lots of flattened 9ths and augmented seconds) is so grabbing, but using it is kind of appropriation -- using another culture's music as novelty. Plenty of composers did it, some very stylized and cliche (Tchaikovsky), while some were legitimately searching for new sounds (Debussy). Either way, the idea of it kind of irks me, but it's something that I keep playing and listening to because it sounds really cool. Should I be self consciously filtering approximation of other cultures music out of my listening and playing?
