365 Day 365: Lotus Flower (acoustic cover)

Here is my final recording, a condensed cover of Radiohead's Lotus Flower, featuring my generous and talented friend Chris Wattam on the vocals. I'm really happy with how it turned out.

Lotus Flower was originally written by Radiohead and they own all the rights and if one of their reps wants it down I'll gladly take it down deargodpleasedon'tsuemeIdon'thaveanymoney.

And with that the project is completed. I'll probably post a big old  debriefing thing tomorrow sometime, but for now I'm going to go breathe a sigh of relief at the watering hole.

finally sucked it up and bought a new xlr so my fancymic will work again. and it does.

the machine head for Donna Lee's D string broke, and Ibanez wants over $100 for a set of new ones, so I will probably cannibalize my p bass (featured here) for one until I can get home and cannibalize my other bass.

365 Day 319: Ongoing

so it may seem that I no longer care for this project. I'm missing posting days, I'm titling posts with what amounts to a keyboard fist-mash, and all of my posts for the past week have been the same melody.

well, the past week and a few days have been crazy. my uncle's funeral was on friday, and I've been back and forth between my parent's home and my home in guelph to keep in touch with the family, and I've barely been keeping my head above the water in terms of schoolwork or my job. I've kept up on the recordings, I just haven't had time to upload them all yet (they're mostly on my phone). The melody found in most of the recent recordings is the opening of Henryk Gorecki's Symphony 3, "Symphony of Sorrowful Songs".

not to mention 365 days is very long. I promise the recordings will get more interesting before the end.

365 Day 235: Walking All Day

felt like I was walking all day because I was in toronto today and yesterday, and everyone walks really slow there, so I walk faster to compensate.

Kind of want to write a piece for Tripoli. maybe I will.

365 Day 233: Ulterior

had a sweet free jam after a party today. (sorry neighbours). should've recorded it to see how it actually sounded outside of playing in it.

here's something else. I don't usually dig the prepared instrument stuff, but I like the sound of this (bread clip thing on the strings).

365 Day 231: Floating in a peaceful sea

365 Mass Update: Days 226, 227, 228, and 229

Well, went camping with the family this weekend. Wasn't really camping because we had my family's giant RV.

on friday (day 226) we sat around the fire

on saturday (day 227) it poured, so I wrote a little progression that I might not use.

on sunday (day 228) my family ran a triathlon, we stopped at a family friend's place in Barrie for a sweet dinner of bacon burgers (burgers with bacon in em), and then I had tea with a good friend. Then I came home and improvised this on my first bass, a Slammer by Hamer that I defretted after I got a good bass. I don't know why I chose to play very in and minor, but I did.

Today (day 229) I wrote a little tune after looking at the chords for Sara Serpa's Praia a little closer. I love her writing, and I'm beginning to understand her use of slash chords a little more (aside from really eschewing the tonal center of the chord, her 'slash' roots usually create a stacked fourth or fifth kind of thing three or four members high). Here's a bit of the chord progression of the piece I wrote. It's a bit slow and sparse but with more direction than the last thing I tried to write like this. I'll render it better when I get back to my proper instruments in Guelph (how I miss them).

365 Day 214: I Made the Law (cover)

Practiced using compression on it, and it worked really well - it's at the volume where it sounds natural after a "professionally masted" punk tune (only thing I really have to test against, my external hdd isn't plugged in). Only thing is that it brought out the distortion in my acoustic's line in -- probably battery was dying, may also have to do with the fact that I was overdriving the channel for half of the recording and didn't bother redoing it (first take ftw). still fairly happy with it.
