365 Day 22: Drilz

got home from a concert, realized I hadn't done my recording for the day.

It's stupid tedious to get things to sound like this.

365 Day 19: Quaint

365 Day 19: Quaint by driedstr

been listening to a lot of www.joshuastamper.bandcamp.com lately. delicious stuff.

original tune.

picked the bass -- it's HARD to play with a pick once you've learned fingerstyle! but I like how it sounds here.

new flatwounds on the electric, so the neck is all bowed. gotta get that fixed.

kind of wish I had a double-reed horn player on the line, and the guitar maybe doing something similar to the bass.

365 Day 15: Upright Harmonics

Something new. I need to learn how to notate this.

365 Day 13: Illogical

Kind of impressionist jazz type head. I'm not sure how the chords work, hahah.

Difficult to play. What do you think?

365 Day 10: Aery Thinness

I wanted this to sound more weird than it does. Maybe I'll work on it some more later.

eh.

Dull sublunary lovers' love
—Whose soul is sense—cannot admit
Of absence, 'cause it doth remove
The thing which elemented it.

But we by a love so much refined,
That ourselves know not what it is,
Inter-assurèd of the mind,
Care less, eyes, lips and hands to miss.

Our two souls therefore, which are one,
Though I must go, endure not yet
A breach, but an expansion,
Like gold to aery thinness beat.

If they be two, they are two so
As stiff twin compasses are two ;
Thy soul, the fix'd foot, makes no show
To move, but doth, if th' other do.

And though it in the centre sit,
Yet, when the other far doth roam,
It leans, and hearkens after it,
And grows erect, as that comes home.

Such wilt thou be to me, who must,
Like th' other foot, obliquely run ;
Thy firmness makes my circle just,
And makes me end where I begun.

365 Day 6: White Tooth Man

Experimental. Not sure if I succeeded. White Tooth Man originally by Iron and Wine.

So heavy.

Improvisation on Cathedral Wisdom Light

Played this after listening to about an hour of William Parker. (For the record, I'm not nearly as awesome as he is.)

Played through crappy casio keyboard speakers, recorded with the built in laptop mic.

The first quarter to half-ish isn't that amazing, but I left it in anyways. Some cool stuff happened in the second half, but I really gotta get practicing my harmonics.

Coagulate

So, I've decided to forego the academic music talk that used to comprise this blog, and make it a place for showcasing short recordings of mine. I've always been jealous of visual artists simply having an online portfolio or a sketch blog, so I figured this is the best I'll get until I take up drawing.

Coagulate is a short piece I did as part of a reflection on the experience of being the "musician" -- writing and performing most of the music onstage -- in a production of Hamlet. This piece reflects the creative process the director, and thus I, went through.

(my first post "away" from academia, and already I've used an em-dash.)
