365 Day 151: Cloudy Water

Inspired by a change of plans and a sudden lonely night.

Listen with speakers/headphones with good bass response.

Took a whole tone tetrachord and made melodies with it, so that each beat had all four notes in the tetrachord. it's kind of like getting hit with the chord on each beat, but there is the melodic element in there. Also threw in that minor second about a quarter of the way in, and each of the basses repeats a different-length section of their melody (ie, bass 1 repeats a 4-beat phrase, bass 2 a 6-beat phrase, bass 3 a 5-beat phrase, and bass 4 a 3 beat phrase) fifteen or twenty times.

Two guitars crystallizing.

Experimenting with harmony and rhythm to see if you can pick out a counter rhythm based on harmonic accents in an otherwise monolithic harmonic texture. ie:

The melodic pattern in this recording is |: 4 + 3 + 5 :|.

The first time is played in major seconds.

The second time every 4th note is a minor second, so the sub-pattern is |: 4 + 4 + 4 :|

The third time is minor seconds.

The fourth time every 4th note is a unison, so the sub pattern is again |: 4 + 4 + 4 :|

I don't think it worked because I didn't play that well. Which is because I'm late. (I'm invoking Emma's rule that I haven't gone to bed yet so it's still today.)

Maybe I'll try a more sustained example when I have more time. But I do have an idea for my next big-ish recording. Hint: The Wilderness of Manitoba
